As you may already have heard, the legendary Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. She was loved by people from all walks of life. This led to many social media memes suggesting that politicians should learn from her.
Dolly is an example of what it looks like to be a chameleon of communication styles. She embodied each style beautifully when needed. Her Creative communication style showed through creating music and her ability to see opportunities to support people.
She was very humble and had profound empathy for people. This clearly demonstrated the Harmony communication style. Her over-the-top appearance and wardrobe, which she often joked about by saying, “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap,” screamed the Action communication style. And behind all that talent, compassion, and glitz, she was a fierce businesswoman. Dolly was disciplined and took control of her career, which, at its core, is the Template communication style.
Being fluent in CHAT is not just about identifying someone else’s communication style and learning how to speak to them in the way they prefer. It is also about mastering each style within ourselves and using them to help us achieve our own goals. That is why becoming a chameleon in CHAT is so important. The more we learn and practice, the easier it becomes. Dolly made this look effortless.
As you look through her accomplishments, we see further evidence of each communication style. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library gifted hundreds of millions of free books worldwide. Clearly, she saw the big picture (Creative) and an opportunity to support those who might not have resources or access to books (Harmony); it was a very generous gift (Action) that also ensured that children had access to educational information (Template).
Or how about Dollywood? Talk about a vision (Creative) that supported her community (Harmony), created employment (Template), and brought tourism (Action) to her hometown in Tennessee.
Dolly built an entertainment empire by embracing all four communication styles. She saw the big picture (Creative) and knew that she needed to control (Template) her destiny. She owned her master recordings and created her own publishing company, which gave her the freedom (Action) to keep industry executives from diminishing her creativity, and through it all, she remained compassionate toward people (Harmony).
It’s truly impressive that Dolly moved effortlessly in and out of communication styles, and it is one of the many reasons she made such an impact on society. What stands out most to me is her willingness to be authentic and vulnerable, to be extremely generous, and to embrace people with kindness.
Dolly came from humble beginnings, living in a one-room cabin and being the fourth of twelve children. Instead of focusing on what she didn’t have, she focused on what she was passionate about and created a legacy that will have a lasting impact on the world.
What is your story? Are you following your passion? Do you embrace all four communication styles to create your own lasting gift to humanity?
As Dolly said, “Dream More (Creative), Learn More (Template), Care More (Harmony), and Be More (Action).”
